About the Guest
Carl Knutson , AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, is a Principal and Design Director at Perkins&Will, where he leads the Washington, D.C. studio’s design practice. In this role, Carl is responsible for shaping design vision across a broad portfolio of civic, higher-education, cultural, and institutional projects, guiding teams from early conceptual thinking through execution.
Born in Mexico City and raised across Central and North America, Carl brings a deeply global and culturally informed perspective to his work. This upbringing has strongly influenced his belief that architecture should reflect the values of the communities it serves while responding thoughtfully to its urban and social context.
Carl earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Lehigh University, where he also studied economics and geology. His professional background includes experience at several internationally recognized firms, including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), VOA Associates, Goettsch Partners, and SmithGroup, before assuming leadership roles at Perkins&Will.
In addition to practice, Carl is an active voice in architectural discourse. He frequently speaks at industry conferences and academic forums on topics including façade design, mass timber, sustainability, and the evolving role of architecture in higher education and public institutions. As a mentor and design leader, he is particularly invested in shaping thoughtful studio culture and supporting emerging architects as they navigate professional practice.
