This conceptual proposal envisions a new African American Museum set within the rich cultural and historical context of New Orleans. The design pays homage to African heritage and diasporic identity, using architectural language rooted in storytelling, resilience, and symbolism.
The museum’s form draws inspiration from organic and vernacular structures—an undulating roof form reminiscent of woven textiles or protective canopies, creating a powerful visual and spatial metaphor for community and shelter. Set amidst a lush landscape, the design fosters dialogue between built form and nature, with carefully crafted pathways and sightlines guiding visitors through immersive, contemplative spaces.
A central oculus and circular plan suggest spiritual and communal gathering, evoking traditions of storytelling and ceremony. The museum is envisioned not only as a space for exhibitions but as a civic anchor, a place to learn, reflect, and celebrate African American heritage and contributions.
